While filming at the Historic Grauman's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles..

Key Grip Richard Mall needed to hang a backlight in a place where a speed rail

menace arm wouldn't work and the location didn't allow for anything to touch the building.

That's where Richard Mall got the idea to build a better version of a menace arm in his garage and once he was done designing and building the prototype he took the invention to be

manufactured by a well known company named Matthews Studio Equipment...

Together they introduced the Max Menace Arm to the grip industry... The first self-contained menace arm.

The Max Menace Arm is compact, fast to setup, extends as far as 17.5 feet, can run parallel to ceilings supporting baby or jr. lights and allowing them to be placed anywhere on most sets or locations. The Max Menace Arm is also easy to move on level ground and can be positioned in any corner or flush against a wall.

In 2013 Matthews Studio Equipment along with Key Grip Richard Mall won the Technical Achievement Award from the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences for the Max Menace Arm!
